Mixed feelings among Nigerians over the deadlocked meeting between Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

In a Radio phone-in programme by, Nigeria Info FM, monitored by our correspondent, showed that the President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) is no longer interested in governance.

“PMB regime is not interested in general wellbeings, including education because he and his top cabals are acting out the script of Boko Haram whose main agenda is to destroy Western education in Nigeria.

“How do you think the threat by the Boko Haram to wipe out Western education would be achieved, isn’t not by deliberate efforts to frustrate Western education.?”

Another phone caller said, “with few months left for PMB to leave Aso Rock, he and his people are only counting days. They are tired of governance, they want to leave problems for the next regime.

“The present move does not suggest they know the next step to take. Even their body languages are telling their

Another caller, Mr Frank said, “Have PMB, VICE been owed salary for one month? Or how many of the state governors’ or lawmakers, ministers salaries are not paid monthly, why then they are not considering resolving?”

Another caller, Madam Rasikat, said, who called “how many of the past or serving politicians, ministers, apart from Senator Chris Ngige have their children in universities in Nigeria? As long as their children are not schooling in the country, they are concern

It would be recalled that the negotiation meeting held by the federal government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday 16 August 2022, again ended in deadlock, thus dashing hope of imminent resumption of academic activities in the nation’s public universities.

The union had met yesterday with Prof. Briggs’ renegotiation committee with a view to resolving its difference with FG towards reopening the universities.

The meeting which took place at the National Universities Commission,(NUC), Abuja, ended, without resolution.

Painfully, the government representatives had nothing new to offer. They simply came to the table without any fresh idea to change the narratives. Prof. Nimi Briggs who stood for PMB adminstration came to the renegotiation committee without bringing any new offer to the table, thereby forcing the lecturers’ union to walk out of the meeting.

Allcitynews.ng source learnt that Prof. Nimi Briggs and his team came to the meeting only to plead with the striking lecturers to suspend their action with a promise that the 2023 national budget will address their demands.

It would be recall that the union embarked on the strike on 2022 Valentine Day over issues ranging from poor funding of public universities; lecturers’ payment platform to unpaid earned allowances as contained in the agreement it entered with the federal government in 2009.

Recalled also that Mr Femi Falana, (SAN) during July 26 2022 protest by Nigeria Labour Congress did tell PMB to leave Aso Rock since he is tired of governance.

“Nigerians did not vote for a regime that would cause them hardship. Since Buhari told Nigerians that he was tired therefore, he should go home.

“We are gathered here today at this protest ground to reject in its entirety the dubious acts of the Buhari-led administration.
“The living standards of Nigerians appear to be getting worse every day. We didn’t vote for a regime to cause hardship for Nigerians, and that is what is going on. As we are gathered here today, terrorism, hardship, depression, recession have taken over our country, but President Buhari is junketing all over the world.

“He has already told Nigerians that he is tired and he is anxious to go home. We are therefore saying today that Buhari must go. He must go. For the lecturers in our tertiary institutions and other workers, we are fully with labour for the struggle.”

For instance, as at today, Wednesday 17 August 2022, allcitynews.ng learnt that over 16, 860 Nigerian students are studying in USA and Europe alone.

About 12,860 Nigerian students are enrolled in over 1,000 educational institutions in the US in 2020-21. According to Open Doors, they make up the largest student cohort from an African nation and the 10th largest worldwide.19 Nov 2021

While in Europe, the umbrella organisation of Nigerian students studying in Europe and Turkey, the Association of Nigerians Students in Europe, Wednesday, said over three million Nigerians are currently studying in higher institutions in different countries across Europe.
