Three days to May Day, will New National Minimum Wage take effect?

By allcitynews.ng

As old National Minimum Wage after five years expired on March 31, the hope of getting fresh National Minimum Wage seems dashed.

Even as Abia, Taraba, Zamfara are still lagging behind by paying the old wage hitherto.

There are strong indications that workers will wait for a longer time to receive a New National Minimum minimum Wage as negotiations have hit the rock.

The delay, allcitynews.ng findings showed was caused by the Federal Government as Organised Labour had already played its role.

The implication of the stalled negotiations is that workers’ hopes for a pay rise ahead of the 2024 May Day scheduled for Wednesday have been dashed.

The new minimum wage ought to have taken effect on April 1, 2024, as the old regime expired on March 31.

The last meeting of the Tripartite Committee on the New National Minimum Wage (TCNMW), tasked with fixing the new wage, was held in the first week of April where stakeholders received the reports of the public hearings across the six geographical zones held on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

It was, however, gathered that although the subcommittees have been meeting on other issues as directed by the TCNMW, yet government has not been playing its role.

According to findings, at the first week of April meeting, members of the committee, that is, the government, labour and private sector employers, were directed to submit their written proposals to the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, (NSIWC), which serves as the secretariat to the TCNMW.

But Federal Government has stylishly been delaying the meeting and the expected announcement which is supposed to be done in 2024 May Day celebrations.

Though Organised Labour, comprising Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), had sent in their demand of N615,000 minimum wages, the Organised Private Sector, (OPS) has equally sent in its proposal, yet government has not been seen taking active step.
