That the Lagos Blue Line Rail is starting operations from September 4, 2023 may no longer be news to some people.

The Blue Line which is part of measures to decongest road traffic, will begin operations on Monday, Sept. 4, 2023.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who disclosed this on his official handle, @jidesanwoolu, said partial passenger operations will begin on September 5 from 6:30-10am and afternoon peak from 4-9:30pm. He added that the operation will start with 12 trips for two weeks, ramping up to 76 trips/day.

There are over 300 CCTV cameras across the entire rail with over 30 cameras monitoring the tracks alone, with command and control centres available in all stations along the track.

“Lagos, this is your project. Take ownership and treat it with decency as you would treat anything that belongs to you. Any altercation or disturbance on the train will not be tolerated. It goes without saying that vandalism also will not be tolerated,” he noted.

On her part, the Managing Director, Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Mrs Abimbola Akinajo, who embarked on test running of the train with newsmen, said that with feasibility study, the train system would be conveying 175,000 passengers on a daily basis.

She said that though the commercial operations would have begun in the first quarter of 2023, it was delayed to ensure that all modalities were in place.

She said that the Blue Line Rail service had five stations, which comprise Marina, National Theatre, Orile-Iganmu, Alaba, and Mile 2.

These operations, according to Akinajo, will start with 12 trips for two weeks, which will later be increased up to 76 trips per day.

The project is handled by the management of Metropolitan Area Transport Authority {LAMATA}.

The completion of the infrastructure is in fulfilment of the promise made by Sanwo-Olu during his 2019 campaign. Though his promise was to deliver the finished work, last quarter of 2022, ahead of the commencement of passenger operations 2023, but he could not do so in 2022.

The Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line is one of the six rail lines and monorail prescribed for Lagos in the state’s Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP).

It was commissioned by former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 24, 2023. That commissioning included the signing of paperwork for the commencement of Phase 2 of the project, which covered from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko. The event was also witnessed by Buhari.

As a segment of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit, the Blue rail line will stretch over a distance of 27.5 km, connecting Marina to Okokomaiko.

Blue Line system will operate on a dedicated and secure pathway, entirely separated from road traffic and pedestrians, eliminating both level crossings and unregulated entry points.

In February 2023, the state government initiated a 2-month trial run of the 13-kilometer Lagos Blue Line train service.
