Organised labour, NLC, NUPPENGASSAN are in mournful mood over death of members in ill-fated helicopter crash.
Organised labour, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) are currently in mournful mood over death of members in ill-fated helicopter crash which occurred on Thursday 24 October 2024.
NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero in his message said:- “It was with great shock that the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) received the news of the fatal crash of a Sikorsky SK76 Helicopter operated by East Wind Aviation into the Atlantic Ocean killing all the passengers and crew members.
“The Captain of the crashed helicopter, Comrade (Captain) Yakubu Dukas, was the National Vice President of the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress.”
Ajaero’s statement continuing stressed:-
“Until his unfortunate demise, Comrade (Captain) Yakubu Dukas was a seasoned and experienced air pilot with over twenty years of flight operations under his belt. He was also a committed trade unionist, activist, and leader who contributed greatly to the development of NAAPE, the NLC, and the broader trade union movement in our country.
“While we await the details of this great tragedy in Nigeria’s aviation sector and subsequent investigation into the cause of this calamity, we extend our deeply felt condolences to the immediate family left behind by our Comrade, the leadership and membership of the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, friends, and colleagues who have been left behind by our departed comrade. We also extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of other victims of this unfortunate crash.
“We pray that God Almighty will grant everyone affected by this crash the fortitude to bear with the irreparable loss. While we call on the aviation authorities to strengthen air safety equipment, facilities and procedures, we pray that our country should never witness this tragic incidence again.”
And their parts, the leadership of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) expressed their sadness over the tragic death of eight occupants in the ill-fated helicopter that crashed on Thursday.
In their separate statements, the President of PENGASSAN, Comrade Festus Osifo and the President of NUPENG, Comrade Williams Akporeha, said, “We are in grief over the tragic loss of our esteemed members in a fatal helicopter crash that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, October 24, 2024, in Rivers State.
They expressed shock and sadness over the incident, highlighting the significant contributions of the deceased to both NUPPENGASSAN and the oil and gas sector and to the nation as whole.
The duo extended heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims, assuring them of unwavering support during this difficult time.
“We share in their grief and will provide assistance to the bereaved families in any way possible.”
The association emphasized its commitment to honoring the memories of its members, describing them as valued professionals whose dedication and service will not be forgotten.
NUPPENGASSAN also confirmed that it is working to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the crash and is cooperating fully with authorities in their investigation.
Osifo and Akporeha urged all parties involved to ensure a thorough and transparent probe to determine the cause of the accident, advocating for the implementation of urgent safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
In honor of the deceased, NUPPENGASSAN called on their branches nationwide to observe a moment of silence and reflection.
