The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to revert to the old price of fuel and electricity tariff or face nationwide labour unrest.
NLC gave the warning at its Central Working Committee meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.
In a communiqué read by NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, the union said the ultimatum would take immediate effect, and warned that it would mobilise its members across the country for protests starting from September 28 if government fails to go back to the old price.
Wabba told journalists that NLC National Executive Committee (NEC) members and the state chapters and its affiliates would meet on September 22 to agree on the industrial action, should the government fail to revert to the old prices by then.
According to him, Wednesday’s decision on the ultimatum “was taken by the Central Working Committee of the NLC. But by the expiration of the ultimatum, if the government fails to reverse the increase in electricity tariffs and fuel pump price, we would hold a meeting on September 28 and take a decision on a strike action.”
The two weeks ago announced a new price for petrol and new tariff for electricity. It raised the ex-depot price of petrol from N138.62 to N147.67, following which marketers raised their pump prices to between N158 and N162 from N148 to N150 in August.
It would be recalled that Trade Unions Congress (TUC) had given the government a seven-day ultimatum, via a letter dated September 4, 2020 and addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari.
