Jesus Prays Alone

36 Then Jesus went with his followers to a place called Gethsemane. He said to them, “Sit here while I go there and pray.” 37 He told Peter and the two sons of Zebedee to come with him. Then he began to be very sad and troubled. 38 Jesus said to Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, “My heart is so heavy with grief, I feel as if I am dying. Wait here and stay awake with me.”

39 Then Jesus went on a little farther away from them. He fell to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, don’t make me drink from this cup. But do what you want, not what I want.” 40 Then he went back to his followers and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “Could you men not stay awake with me for one hour? 41 Stay awake and pray for strength against temptation. Your spirit wants to do what is right, but your body is weak.”

42 Then Jesus went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if I must do this and it is not possible for me to escape it, then I pray that what you want will be done.”

43 Then he went back to the followers. Again he found them sleeping. They could not stay awake. 44 So he left them and went away one more time and prayed. This third time he prayed, he said the same thing.

45 Then Jesus went back to the followers and said, “Are you still sleeping and resting? The time has come for the Son of Man to be handed over to the control of sinful men. 46 Stand up! We must go. Here comes the one who will hand me over.”

THUR 27 OCT 22 MESSAGE:
Finding and doing the will of God should be the goal of every Christian. This is because doing and staying in the will of God is what separates believers from unbelievers as well as heaven-bound individuals from the hell-bound ones.

The Bible paints a good picture of what the will of God is in Matthew 26:39. As Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, He cried to the Father to take the cup from Him. He, however, added, “Not my will but Your will be done, Father.” The will of the Father was that Jesus should die so that mankind would be saved from sin and its consequences. Therefore, the will of God is the sovereign plan of God that will happen in the coming hours.

In Matthew 12:50, Jesus said that whoever does the will of His Father is His brother or His sister. Why is it important that you find and do the will of God? The Bible provides some answers to the question. Matthew 7:21 says, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” Since the ultimate goal of every Christian pilgrim is to make heaven, it is important to find the will and do the will of God at all times.

The Bible provides another reason in 1 John 2:17, “And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” Here, Apostle John reveals that a natural outcome of salvation is receiving the grace and power to do the will of God (Ephesians 2:10). He also means that while other earthly things will perish one day, a believer who does the will of God and lives in constant fellowship with Him will go on forever.

How can you do the will of God? First, in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Apostle Paul counselled that the will of God is that we thank Him all the time and for all things. Second, he added that we hold our bodies, souls and spirits in sanctification and abstain from fornication
(1 Thessalonians 4:3).

Beloved, are you doing God’s will?
