Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, 18 May 2022 announced a blanket ban on operations of commercial motorcycles popularly called okada in some areas of the state.

The move followed the gruesome murder of one Sound Engineer, David last week and the way and manner with which they drive against traffic on major roads in the state.

David was lynched and later burnt by some irate okada riders in the Lekki area of the state, a sad incident over which 10 suspects were already in the police net.

Sanwo-Olu announced the ban while speaking with all DPOs and Area Commanders across the state at the Lagos House, Ikeja, saying the directive covers all highways and some local governments, including Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Surulere, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland and Apapa.

The governor said other security agencies will join in the enforcement.

Most of the okada riders, often drive with recklessness and without regard to motorists or pedestrians.

Speaking with allcitynews.ng, Malam Amino at Allen Aenue blamed incursion of foreigners for the strange and unfriendly attitudes by most okada riders.

“Me I be okada rider. Me I no dey like as most of our people are behaving. They are ready to brush people’s vehicles and run away. What is worrying me most is that most of those okada riders are not from Nigeria. So they can easily run away because they are not from our country Nigeria.”

Speaking with allcitynews.ng, another respondent, who simply identified himself as Khali said, “though the ban will affect me also, I am happy for the ban. Most of those riders are enemies of peace and progress. Since they don’t have fix house address, they can do evil and run away with their okada.”
