About the late Access Bank Founder, Herbert Wigwe

The Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, has passed away.

Unverified report said the Access Bank CEO, Roosevelt Herbert Wigwe, his wife, son and three others died in the  helicopter crash, which reportedly took place Friday 9, 2024 night in California.

Here are 11 things to know about Wigwe:

1. Herbert Wigwe was 58 years old at the time of his death. He was born on August 15, 1966.

2. He obtained a degree in Accountancy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State.

3. He furthered his education with an MA in Banking and Finance from the University College of North Wales (now Bangor), and an MSc in Financial Economics from the University of London.

4. Wigwe commenced his career at Coopers & Lybrand, Lagos, as a management consultant, and later became a qualified chartered accountant.

5. He joined Guaranty Trust Bank after his time at Capital Bank, where he spent over a decade working in corporate and institutional banking, eventually becoming the executive director in charge of institutional banking.

6. He also held the positions of Chairman at Access Bank Ghana Limited, Access Investment & Securities Limited, Central Securities and Clearing System (CSCS), and Access Bank (UK) Limited until his demise.

7. In 2016, the Boys’ Brigade (BB) appointed Herbert Wigwe as State Patron for Lagos State Council, in recognition of his exemplary role in society and contributions to youth development.

8. Wigwe was honored as the 2016 Banker of The Year by The Sun and Vanguard newspapers separately.

9. In 2016, he established The HOW Foundation, a non-profit organization.

10. In October 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari conferred the Nigerian national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on him.

11. Wigwe was the visionary behind the upcoming Wigwe University in Isiokpo, Rivers State, expected to commence in September 2024
