When the management of Wufas Agronet carried crusade on food security to Nigerian public, it was a reminder of one of the sayings of a renowned philosopher, Albert Einstein, that to keep balance on a bicycle, the rider must keep riding.
By this, the leadership of Wufas Agronet urged participants in agribusiness to keep pushing their products in order to attain acceptable and balance condition.
Describing coffee as one of the most valuable commodities after petroleum crude oil, the outfit said that over 6oo billion cups (35cl std) of coffee are taken yearly world over (ICO).
In 2015, Coffee sales attracted about $48 billion in USA at retail price of $22 (thrice daily /week) . But with the social and nutritional importance, Nigeria Coffee market remains unattractive due to inability to penetrate into international coffee commodity trade organisations. — (like Nigeria membership of OPEC in Crude oil sales).
Nutritionally, coffee is a potent source of antioxidant and others such as Riboflavin, Pantothenic acid, Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium, Naicin and of course Caffeine with lots of pharmaceutical Potency.
The Wufas Agronet human capital food processing development consultancy lamented that poor pricing has continued to bedevil the market despite huge import demand due to lack of marketing channels in the international domain as provided by ICO.
In addition, the consultancy firm expressed dissatisfaction that in spite of Nigeria ‘s ratification into – ICO, coffee business has been in the dip due mainly to the low price as a result of lack of international marketing channels.
“Nigeria farmers have not been privileged to International Coffee Organisation’s functions.
“With this ratification, (just like Nigeria membership of OPEC ) Nigeria coffee communities can now latch fully into International coffee organisation with full membership status. Which will enable Nigeria to benefit immensely from the organisation in areas such as policy formulation in coffee trade worldwide. Including access to finance for coffee farmers thereby boosting coffee production and Nigeria’s inclusion in political, social and economic reasoning in coffee world.”
