We did not demand parking charges for places of worship- LASG

By allcitynews.ng

Lagos State Government has denied the story flying around over purported plan by an arm of the state government,
Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA)
to start charging motorists who parked their vehicles around places of worship during services.

The statement by the General Manager, Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, clarified the recent purported announcement, which sparked outcry from all quarters, especially within the state.

The post falsely claimed that starting October 2024, LASPA would charge churches  and mosques for parking on streets around places of worship.

LASPA has confirmed that this information is incorrect.

According to the Adelabu,  “Lagos State government will not impose parking fees on churches or mosques.

“Instead, LASPA is introducing a new parking policy aimed at reducing traffic congestion across Lagos.”

Also LASPA statement further said, “Like many major cities, Lagos faces a high demand for parking.

“The new regulated on-street parking model, approved earlier this year, is designed to manage parking resources more effectively.”

In addition, LASPA said, this model was announced at a stakeholder forum on February 14, 2024, in Ikeja where representatives from religious organizations and other stakeholders also attended.

Adelabu, explained that LASPA has already informed these groups about the upcoming changes.

The policy targets improved traffic flow and parking management, not specific religious groups.

Moreover, Adelabu stressed that the goal is to update all stakeholders about the new parking scheme.

For example, Lagos State has already marked suitable roads for on-street parking in areas like Ikeja, Surulere, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, and Lekki, adding about 1,800 new parking spaces.

The communications sent to religious institutions were to inform them about their roles and the costs associated with using these new parking lots.

These facilities will be managed by concessionaires under LASPA’s supervision.

For more information, LASPA can be contacted at 02-01-2275230 or 02-01-2275231, or visited at 36b Sasegbon Street, Ikeja GRA, Lagos.
