Three months after, women seek for representation of gender bills

Apparently tired of waiting with hands in akimbo, hoping to get attention, which may seem elusive unless they take drastic steps, women have again renewed call on lawmakers to present again the gender bills.

As a result the women under aegis of Womanisfesto, a coalition of over 500 women groups in Nigeria is asking the National Assembly to DISCUSS the five gender bills and REVISIT three of the bills by 18th of May 2022.

Womanisfesto in a statement called on the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila to represent the gender bills that were rejected by lawmakers in March.

Noting that NASS must fulfill her promise to Nigerian Women, the group added the purpose is to make the constitution more gender-inclusive, and sign their petition.

As the petition has so far be signed by 800, the group stated that on “the 8th of March 2022, the House of Representatives took a historic step to rescind three of the gender bills which were voted down on the 1st of March 2022 when 68 bills were considered for constitutional alteration.

“The Rt. Hon. Speaker Femi Gbajabiamiala and other members of the House promised to recommit to the bills in the interest of gender inclusivity within four weeks.”

In addition the group stressed that “As leaders of women groups in Nigeria, we are worried about the silence on the re-committal of these bills. We are also worried that the said three gender bills did not make it into the list of the 44 out of the 68 bills that have been transmitted to the State Houses of Assembly for consideration and voting as required by the constitution. It is deeply disturbing that this happened.”

Furthermore, they said, “We believe that as leaders of the country, the leadership of the House of Representatives are men and women of honour and we implore them to take URGENT positive steps in the interest of the public.

We will like to remind members of the House of Representatives that Nigerian women were at the National Assembly clamouring for a Nigerian constitution that should be gender inclusive.”

It would be recalled that on the 22nd of March 2022, a delegation from the House of Representatives led by the Majority Leader, Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, met with over 2,000 women and made the commitment that the House of Representatives will re-present the three gender bills popularly known as “women and vulnerable person bills’ for votes within seven (7) legislative days.

The seven (7) legislative days elapsed on the 11th of April 2022 and we are yet to know the decision of the House of Representatives.

Womanifesto is now calling on Rt.Hon. Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila and Majority Leader Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa to call a meeting with the representatives of the Women Groups to discuss the decision of the House Representatives regarding the commitments. We will expect a response from you no later than 15th May 2022.
