Role of Nestlé in addressing poverty amidst hardship, economic downturn

Now in its fourth year, Nestlé Nigeria has continue in tackling poverty amidst hardship in its own way.

How? The management is not only improving lives of women, students, but men also is touching lives of media practitioners by set up and sustaining the annual Nestlé Writing Competition whereby journalists are being enriched.

That the company has been using nutrition as tool in breaking circle of poverty, may no longer be news.

But the fresh news is that it has continue to reduce poverty amongst Nigerians, especially women, through its vehement fight for inclusion of women in governance by their contributions in farming and other skill acquisitions Nestlé is empowering
women.

Knowing that malnourished minds will not be able play useful roles to societal issues, Nestlé, has continue to empower everyone with nutritious food. The Head of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs at Nestlé Nigeria, Victoria Uwadoka, recently shared insights on how the company is improviding quality of life in Nigeria.

Uwadoka speaking on health and food during on programme in Lagos described Nestlé as a responsible brand.

According to Uwadoka, the uniqueness of the Nestlé brand, is that “We are the ‘Good food, good life’ company and we are basically about unlocking the power of food to enhance the quality of life for everyone; in today’s world and for generations to come.

“Nutrition is more than eating anything to fill your stomach; nutrition has to be what exactly it says — it needs to nourish.

“The important thing about food is it must have the right vitamins to build your body. So what Nestlé does is fortify the foods that we put out on the market. As a result, over 80% of our food portfolio is fortified with Iron.

Another way it is touching lives from all angles, is in making women empowerment a reality through the introduction of a series of programmes such as “Nestlé Nigeria’s Empowering Rural Women in Nigeria” which is designed to educate and empower women to be financially and economically independent.

The programme also helps rural women to scale up their retail businesses and sustain the new level up to three times the size of their existing businesses through training, mentorship, and grants in the form of Nestlé products that contributes significantly to the wellbeing of Nigerians.

Statistics available to allcitynews.blog showed that between 2021 when the programme was launched till date, over 332 women have been empowered nationwide.

Findings by allcitynews.blog showed that with the launch of this programme, more women are breaking barriers and succeeding in their small and medium business.

A case in point is elated Mrs. Oghenetega Delight, Jombo stores, one of the beneficiaries from Port Harcourt.

According to Oghenetega who won the best-performing beneficiary position, she recorded a business growth of 675 per cent within six months of joining the programme.

She also stated she has sustained a monthly turnover of over N547,623.67 all thanks to Nestlé Nigeria’s Empowering Rural Women in Nigeria.

Additionally, since its launch, the programme has expanded its reach to various regions across Nigeria, including: Abuja, South-West (Oshogbo, Ede, and Ijesha. In Enugu state it is being carried out in Nsikan, and Obolo-afor. In South-South, Port harcourt, In North East, it is in Bauchi, and Lagos it is being implemented in Ikorodu, and Sagamu. One thing common about the areas of implementation is that they are rural communities where the people that needs the assistance lives.

According to Nestlé, the programme is designed to allow beneficiaries receive grants valued at 300 per cent of their monthly sales in the form of Nestlé products, business training and a three-month mentorship programme.

Still on impacting lives of media practitioners, Nestlé held the celebration of the third edition which took place in Marriot Hotel, Ikeja GRA, December 8, 2023.

And in announcing the 2024 edition, Nestlé, the leading nutritional, health, and wellness company, said is thrilled to announce the launch of the fourth edition of Nestlé Nigeria Media Awards. The aim of the award is to recognize and reward professionalism and excellence in journalism, celebrating the outstanding contributions of media professionals in Nigeria.

The Nestlé Nigeria Media Awards provide a platform for highlighting the expertise and dedication of journalists focused on nutrition, building thriving communities and protecting the planet, across various platforms. This year’s edition promises to be even more remarkable, as it continues to honour those who have demonstrated outstanding skills in reporting, investigative journalism, feature writing, and other categories.
