Organised labour under the umbrella of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), stormed and picketed the headquarters of Sterling Oil, around Muri Okunola area, Victoria Island, Lagos Nigeria, on Tuesday 11 March 2025, following alleged anti-labour activities leveled against the company.
As part of the efforts to draw the attention of the general public and constituted authorities, towards the anti-labour activities whereby Sterling Oil, has all their working hierarchies filled with Indian nationals at the detriment of qualified Nigerians, the PENGASSAN helmsman vowed to call for reinforcement by mobilising all oil and gas workers for protest against the company if Federal Government should fail to call them to order and address abuse of expertrate quota.
Speaking at first day of the picketing of the company, PENGASSAN President, Comrade Festus Osifo who led the picketing explained that the main reason for the first day picketing is to create the awareness to the ccompany and entire country over the way and manner the oil company has been flouting Labour laws of the land.
According to Osifo, Sterling Oil management has been violating our labour laws. They filled all positions with foreigners, even their gatemen, vulcanisers, their cooks that are preparing Nigerian dishes are Indians, even their cleaners are all foreigners at the expense of Nigerians.
“But when you go to other international oil and gas companies, you have Nigerians even as managing directors, deputy managing directors, executive general managers, general managers and so on contrary to what is happening in this Sterling Oil.
“In fact, this picketing is meant to correct anomalous activties being carried out by them because they are not mindful of the way they have been ddisobeying ur laws because they felt they have pocketed all concerned agencies. But there is no way they can stop labour from protecting the law of the land, so we are here.”
The leadership of the union including oil workers, gathered at the entrance of the company’s heaadoffice as early as 6a.m. chanting labour solidarity songs.
They were seen holding placards with inscriptions, “Reinstate Sacked Nigerian workers; “Stop Collective. X Bargaining Agreement Victimisation” , stop CBA violation , among others and chanting the solidarity song.
Efforts by allcitynews to speak with any of the management team before going to publishing proved abortive as all the workers of the company due to the previous circular from the offices have kept off from the offices.
Part of the cicrular signed by their HRSS, obtained by allcitynews read:- “Work From Home Notification Ocar Ail, This is to announce that, due to @ protest and strike organised by the PENGASAAN union, we will observe Work from Home on 11° March 2025 till further information, for all the members and all based outside in Lagos (HQ) for business purposes.
