The vow by NLC President, Comade Joe Ajaero and his National Administrative Council (NAC) team to take drastic steps in pruning of casualisation in Nigeria, was a reminder that solution to organised greed is organised labour-Thomas Donahue.

As the impact of employers of labour of continue to ravage the Nigerian economy, and disrupting the joy of having a legitimate means of livelihood, which is being turned sour for many workers, following exploitation by employers of labour, National Administrative Council (NAC) of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), being led by Comrade Joe Ajaero has promised to fight and win war against casualisation by setting up of anti-casualisation and picketing teams within NLC.

NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero who led the team of NAC of the union in coutesy visits to some unions in Lagos, expressed the enormous tasks which are mainly centred on exploitative employers of labour who have converted their establishments to centres of modern day slave grounds as battles that must be won through joint efforts.

Vexed by the brazen exploitation and dehumanisation of workers, in all the unions visited by Ajaero and his NAC team, he noted that since freedom is not gotten but must be taken by force, NLC is ready to liberate workers from slave masters who are operating as employers of labour.

As if he was aware of the proverbial word of Otunba Ahmed Tinubu that a leader remains relevant only by listening and attending the demands of his people, Ajaero vowed to meet the demands of all the union leaders over the conversion of establishments to places of modern day slavery by re-establishment of some training schools, like Rain School, etc whereby most labour leaders will be tutored in solid labour and unionism ways.

Following the similarities of all the challenges, the union leadership put up, from day one visit to National Union of Chemical Footwear Rubber Leather and Non Metallic Products Employees (NUCFRLANMPE), SEWUN, National President, National Union of Food, Beverages & Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE), on Tuesday 28 February 2023, day 2, Association Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) Nigerian Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), day 3, NUBIFIE, NUPENG NUEE, and rounded up the visit to MWUN, 3 Friday 2023, Ajaero said the only solution is to establish picketing and anti-casualisation committees to combat the problems.

Furthermore, the NLC helsman explaned that the reasons for the courtesy visits to unions, is to find the collaboration of all the unions and other stakeholders in tackling the problems that have been affecting the workers.

He called on the unions to come out with lists of their challenges, lists of yet-to-unionised companies and their locations to enable the NLC know how sanitise the sector.

Ajaero noted that one of the factors militating against any prospects for any solution to redundancy and casualisation is that the current leadership of some unions and Ministry of Labour and Employment are also directly or indirectly in ownership of most of the outsourcing companies.

“What they are doing is to change casualisation to outsourcing, it is an advanced way of manipulation of casualisation. It’s just unfortunate that ministry is indirectly supporting casualisation by making casual workers to be unionised. How can you give blanket licence for people in casual to be unionised whereas within two years the employers will sack them and replace them with new set? What we are fighing for and which I believe the ministry should support, is conversion of such workers into permenent staff before they are unionised.”
