The President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero has announced the readiness of NLC to hold a nationwide anti-telecom tariff hike protest on Tuesday, February 4.
The nationwide protest was agreed on at the just-concluded National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting of NLC.
The protest, according to Ajaero is aimed at sounding a note of warning to Federal Government as workers will not watch and wait for things to grow worse, as such, the Union would resist the planned hike as it would worsen the poverty level across the country.
It would be recalled that NLC had, on January 22, rejected the 50 per cent telecommunication tariffs hike approved by the Federal Government through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
According to NLC, the 50 per cent tariff hike approval, “at a time Nigerian workers and the masses are grappling with unprecedented economic hardship, is a clear assault on their welfare and an abandonment of the people to corporate fat cats.”
According to him, “The National Administrative Council (NAC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) convened an emergency meeting today, January 29, 2025, to deliberate on pressing national issues, including the recent approval of a 50% increase in telecommunications tariff by the Nigenan Communicatons Commission (NCC). After extensive discussions, the followmng resolutions were reached:-
“NAC In-session totally rejected the 50°. Telecom Tariff Hike which it considers as too harsh for the general masses. It therefore strongly condemns the Nigeria Communications Commission’s decision to approve the increase in telecommunications tariff. This decision is not only insensitive, unjustifiable, but is also a direct assault on Nigerian workers and the general populace, who are already burdened by worsening economic hardship foisted on them by policies of government which was no fault of theirs.
“To express our collective opposition to this arbitrary tariff hike, the NLC will embark on a nationwide mass rally on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. The rally will serve as a warning on the dangers of imposing such an unfair increase on a struggling populauion earning a minimum wage; a population that has suffered outrageous hike in the price of petrol, high cost of food, hike an electncity tariff and general rising inflation.”
In the letter jointly signed by Ajaero and the General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, the Labour Centre called all NLC affiliates and state councils to mobilise all their members in preparation for the February 4, 2025, nationwide protest rally.
Civil society are also encouraged to join in the preparation for the protest.
NlC calls on Nigerian workers, the informal sector, and the general public to stand in solidarity against this unjust policy.
