Nestlé clarifies stands on sugar inclusion in infant cereals

By allcitynews.ng

Set to fulfil its goal of sustainable food and drinks suitable for wellbeing at time and for all ages, Nestlé Nigeria has clarified its stand as concerning the on going video in circulation.

It reiterated that the Organisation is set to unlock the power of food to enhance quality of life for everyone, irrespective of age today and for generations to come

The clarification became imperative following the video currently in circulation which tried to paint picture of double standards by of the firm from one country to another.

The statement by Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Victoria Uwadoka, made available to allcitynews.ng, Wednesday 19 June 2024 noted that
Nestlé has one standard, irrespective of the country of operation.

Does Nestlé add sugar to infant formulas and infant cereals in Central & West Africa?

To be clear, there is no double standard.

We apply the same nutrition, health, and wellness principles everywhere in the world, which are aligned with both international and local guidelines and regulations.”

According to Uwadoka, the global standard is a applicable also to Nigeria, so there is no cause for alarm.

The same nutrition, health, and wellness principles everywhere in the world as applicable to Nestlé in Nigeria:

“This includes compliance with labeling requirements and thresholds on carbohydrate content that encompasses sugars.

“Like everywhere in the world, in Central and West Africa, we do not add sugars (sucrose and glucose) to infant formulas for children aged 0-12 months.”

Moreover she explained that, “In Central and West Africa, all our growing up milks (12 – 36 months) have no added sugars except Nido 1+ to which we add honey, in compliance with strict international and local regulations.

“Regarding infant cereals (from 6 months), there may be slight variations in recipes around the world.”

Furthermore Uwadoka claimed that “In Central and West Africa, the content of sugars in our range of infant cereals follows strict international and local regulations. This does not compromise the nutritional value of our products for infants and young children.

“In Europe, Nestlé’s range of infant cereals comes with and without added sugars.

“Our milks and cereals for infants and young children are fortified with vitamins and minerals such as iron to help tackle malnutrition in Central and West Africa.”
