That economic hardship is ravaging the land is no longer news to both adults and youngsters across the country.

That the company has recorded lost of N79.5bn following Naira devaluation in first quarter of 2024, may also not be fresh news to economist watchers.

In the same economy where many companies are falling and shutting down after stepping on the banana peels of multiple taxation, near-zero access to forex and epileptic electricity supply coupled with hike in prices of fuel and diesel whereby they could not withstand the harsh business environment, yet Nestle is lifting many lives from poverty despite level.

But the news here is that Nestle has remained committed in paying adequate attention to youth empowerment and development, sustainability issues including environment, social, occupational, community health and safety through its various corporate governance.

For example, although the company is paying those students on internship programme, between N240–N600K per year, which includes base salary and additional pay, though the average Intern base salary at Nestlé is N360K per year, Nestle recently has embarked on schools competitions in a society where many companies are lamenting bad economic environment, as a way to build and nurture the young towards healthy future. Why? because Nestle is of the belief that only healthy youth can stand the test of time and can also come out with sound developmental thoughts with good policies for future development of the country.

Another step it is taking in actualising its planned corporate social responsibility is by involving schools across the country in one competition or another. For instance, it announced the winners of the 2024 Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK) Quiz Competition few weeks ago.

In it, Oke-Ona United School in Ilugun Elega, Ogun State, and UBE Primary School Pasali in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja received the esteemed distinction, as students from the two schools displayed their understanding of the four main pillars of the N4HK initiative: physical activity, hydration, healthy nutrition, and sustainability.

The competition, according to Nestle was meant to promote healthy behaviours from an early age. The Nutrition Quiz programme benefited 35 schools: 20 in Ogun State, 10 in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and five in Lagos State.

Speaking on the initiative, the corporate communications, Public Affairs, and Sustainability Lead at Nestlé Nigeria,Victoria Uwadoka, highlighted the significance of this initiative, said “By focusing on children’s health and well-being, Nestlé for Healthier Kids aims to create a lasting positive impact on future generations. Equipping children with healthy habits early on can have profound effects on individuals, families, and communities.

And in the same business environment where over 767 manufacturing companies has shut down in Nigeria with N350 billion goods unsold based on high cost, Nestle has continued in playing it role in the industrialization agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

Though many would have thought of downsizing workforce based on the lost of Naira N79.5bn, the management of Nestle has not only sailed through that but has also reiterated the resolve to add more value to lives of all consumers, irrespective of age, culture, religion or tribe.

The management resolved to join in growth of the country, is reminder of the popular philosophical saying of James Cash Penney, Founder of JCPenney, “that growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together.”
