Insecurity could lead to scarcity of food -NUFBTE

If not swiftly addressed, the continued kidnappings, banditry and general insecurity could lead to acute shortage of food and other essential commodities.

The President of the National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE), Comrade David Idowu Oyelekan who made the call on 15 October 2021 while speaking with allcitynews.ng assured that he believe that there was hope for the country in spite of the present challenges.

Citing killings of farmers as some of the reasons for his warning stressed that continued attacks on farmers by bandits and kidnappings whereby farmers can no longer go to farms could affect farming.


“As it is now, insecurity in the country is already affecting farmers. Their inaccessibility to their farm land will definitely have consequences during harvest period as they will have nothing to harvest.”

Furthermore Oyelekan reminded government that inasmuch as there are crises and people no longer feel safe to travel by road, number of Nigerians would be denied access to food and other essential within few weeks from now.

However he said “There is hope for this country. We only need to change our orientation and ideology. I believe that, if we can all work as a team, we would change the story of this country for good.”

He called for more creation ofjobs through the Organised Private Sector, adding that government alone cannot create all the needed jobs.

“Government alone cannot be employer of labour. Rather, government should provide enably environment like security of lives and property for private sector to thrive. It is when private sector is well established that they can be able to create jobs.

“And creating more jobs will help to reduce the rate crime and general insecurity. Government should remember that failure to create jobs will force some people into looking for alternative ways to survive.”
