The leadership of Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI) has expressed concerns over the growing shortage of general digital skills occasioned by the brain drain in Africa, urging Nigerian workers, especially those in banking industry to embrace Information Technology to make them relevant in this digital skills age.
Thus when the President of ASSBIFI, Comrade Oyinkan Olasanoye called for more capacity buildings for financial workers, she was directly reminding them that training remains the bedrock of professionalism based on the new development whereby workers are now being forced to work from homes.
Expressing her displeasure at the way the financial sector is heading to, following the harsh business environment, she said Nigeria is losing most talented people, especially in Information Technology section to other countries who place much value on them, and such vacuum would need filling.
Addressing Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) this week, Olasanoye said “we are in IT conscious age whereby many can stay in their houses to carry out their daily tasks while those who have not complied may be swept off based on the happenings whereby most banks are now cutting operational hours because of high cost of diesel and other constraints.
“As Nigerian financial industry cannot be exempted from the harsh environment of doing business in the country, some banks, and other financial institutions may be forced to cut jobs. We cannot stop them from doing so, but we can only force them to follow proper due process whereby those to be affected by such cut would not just been thrown into labour markets.
“And those workers should not just by one period assessment be thrown out of job. At least, the normal way of assessment performance is three years.
She expressed the resolve of ASSBIFI for protection of jobs of members through reorientation of most workers towards acquisition of digital skills.
Urging them to see IT as veritable tool for advancement in this age, Olasanoye said, ” As information technology on financial services also allow customers to be able to easily complete online transactions, which creates a better convenience in finance, allowing for the development of information technology and initially create a more fast and efficient service, we have been having and still intending to hold capacity building for members not only to equip them but also make them to see IT as additional advantage for professionalism in the industry.
Although, the ASSBIFI helmswoman is unconsciously following the word of a renowned thinker, Founder of Firestone, that growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership, Olasanoye reiterated the plan of her leadership to keep members of the association in top form so as to fill the vacuum being created in the financial sector by information technology.
