Electricity tariff hike: Labour demands reversal of privatisation

Organised labour under the umbrella of Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have called on Federal Government to reverse the privatisation of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) based on the inability of the investors to bring the expected turnaround restoration of electricity.

The unions made the during the picketing of DISCOS in Ikeja DISCOS, Ikeja in Mainland, Lagos.

Just as workers in Ikeja discos that arrived very early on Monday morning were sent back home while those that had already entered the premises were chased out of the premises.

Chanting war slogans and carrying various placards, the protesters demanded for the downward review of the hike and called for reversal of the privatisation of Power Sector.

The unionists expressing their surprise and displeasure over Federal Government’s intervention over the hike along side the suspension of cyber security in fee.

“We thought that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will instruct for the reversal of the electricity hike as he did for cyber security. We are no longer going to fold our hands to watch the masses pushed to poverty through the various hikes.”

And also they blamed Discos for too much hikes at the detriment of sound service delivery, adding that rather than concentration on service content that could have improve their service delivery, they are only interested in tariff hikes.

Adding that Nigerians should be allowed to breathe, they reminded everyone that  Labour Unions also need to breathe for the betterment of the society.

They stressed that it was an injustice and unacceptable for more burden to be placed on the masses in the name of electricity tariff hike.

Speaking during the picketing, NLC Lagos State Chairman, Comrade Funmi Sessi describing the hike as another form of injustice against the poor masses, she said it must be reversed in order reduce the burdens on the masses.

She said, despite the hardship which bad policies have inflicted on Nigerians, accepting this hike in electricity tariff will further impoverish more Nigerians.
