TOPIC for WED 04/05/22:-WRONG IMAGINATIONS
WELCOME to DCLM Devotional for 04/05/22
TEXT:JOB 21:22-34.
KEY VERSE: Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me” (JOB 21:27)
During a visit to an electronic factory in Scotland in 1999, the late Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, saw a messy fuse box and said it looked “as though it was put in by an Indian”. Within hours, Buckingham Palace had to apologise to the nation of India. His statement was considered racist and uncomplimentary. He once asked a wealthy islander in Cayman Islands, “Aren’t most of you descended from pirates?” Another example of hasty conclusions without facts.
Job’s three friends also jumped to a conclusion that he was suffering because of his sins. In our text, he faulted his three friends for their wrong perceptions about him. Their rush to condemn without knowing the details about his predicaments was very painful to him. He referred to them earlier as miserable comforters and counsellors. In this chapter, he accused them of putting up cynical devices and falsehood.
Like the late Prince of Edinburgh, anyone can be tempted to make a conclusion based on how things appear. We need, however, to understand that situations vary and innocent people sometimes suffer wrongly.
We should be careful how we reduce people’s lives to a single story. Things are not always the way they appear outwardly. We should be kind while dealing with people, especially while comforting the bereaved. It is important to pray and have a clear understanding from God before rushing to conclusion. Words can heal or hurt, lift up people or rift them apart. Let our speech be always with grace and seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6).
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Weigh your words and think deep before you speak.
THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 1 SAMUEL 15-16.
4/5/22 MEDITATION
The Christian as a comforter and counsellor
1. Comforting without inspiration
a. Job’s friends had a good intention to comfort Job.
b. However, they were caught doing the work of God with mere human intellect, psychology and wisdom.
c. Unfortunately, since it was a spiritual task, the human comfort only made Job more miserable, v34.
d. To be effective in comforting those who need it, we must be guided and filled by the Comforter, the Holy Spirit.
e. Never rush to comfort someone in the spirit without praying to receive inspiration from God.
QUESTIONS
a. How effective are you in the ministry of comforting those who need it in truth?
b. Can you summarize the message of JOB in vv22-29?
God is omniscience while man is not (v22) and hence it is needless arguing with Him. Furthermore, death is a leveller. After death, all men stands equal before God, vv22-26. Therefore, always think and plan in the context of eternity with less emphasis on your earthly status.
2. Counsellor without illumination
a. Job’s friends could not discern the real problem of Job and therefore their words, though theologically true, were not relevant to the needs of Job, v27.
b. This made the counselee to call their counselling vain and of no profit, v34.
QUESTION:
a. Do you have divinely imparted spirit of discernment to be able to discern the unspoken problem of people and the right words to help them?
b. Do people testify that your ministration and couselling actually meet them at the point of their needs?
PRAYER points
Lord, I ask for the Spirit of comforter to fill my heart and teach me to be an effective comforter.
Lord, give me the heavenly auction so that my counselling and ministrations will be meeting the needs of people.
Lord, let the spirit of comfort rest on all those who need comfort and encouragement in the church.
Lord, I ask for more spirit of discernment and revelation on our pastors for their ministry to be meeting the needs of people more and more.
HYMN Lord speak to me.(GHS 61)
