BREAKING: Police allegedly arrest NLC president in Owerri

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Imo State on Wednesday 1 November 2023, allegedly arrested the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

The Head of Information, NLC, Benson Upah, who spoke to allcitynews.ng said Ajaero was arrested and taken to unknown destination.

Also some of the journalists covering the protest have been brutalized by the security personnel.

According to Upah, “President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero was picked up a few minutes ago from NLC state council secretariat by heavily armed policemen in Owerri and taken to an unknown destination. And some of your journalist colleagues, mostly photojournalists covering the protest have been brutalized,” Upah informed our correspondent via a WhatsApp message.

It would be recalled that the NLC had vowed to mobilise its members for a total strike in Imo state starting today, November 1, 2023 based on habitual abuse and violation of the rights of workers in the state by the Government.

The General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja had in that statement said the “on the industrial action on Wednesday, the 1st day of November, 2023 that the union has taken rvery necessary step to ensure the effective of this action for the liberation of the workers in Imo state who have been held captive, intimidated and grossly violated by a government that ought to protect them.

The protest is being led by the NLC State Chairman; Comrade George Ofoegbu and his Executive including the various industrial and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) which had mobilized its members across the State is also joining in day one of the protest.

Ugboaja said the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has joined in order compel the state Government to begin to respect the rights of its workers to decent work and healthy living.

“It is therefore an organized labour action that speaks to the degree of the understanding of the deprivation and suffering which the State Government has unleashed on its workers and its refusal to honour agreements that have been reached with it over the years.”
