Workers’ Rights Campaign (WRC) has expressed disappointment over the hard conditions placed upon the reinstatement of Nurse Seluwa Oluwaseun Vincent by the management of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).
The The National Coordinator, Comrade Lai Brown and the National Secretary, Comrade Kelvin Ayemhenre, who made this known to allcitynews.ng after the meeting which took in Lagos on Tuesday blamed the school authorities for trying to discourage Seluwa Oluwaseun Vincent from his educational pursuit by bringing herculean conditions upon the reabsorption of the student.
According to the duo, “WRC stands firmly with Student Nurse Seluwa Oluwaseun Vincent. We condemn in strong terms the harsh and unfair conditions set by management of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in collusion with representatives of the State government and NANS leadership for Vincent’s reinstatement to school.”
Further, Brown and Ayemhenre said, ”
These conditions are meant to punish Comrade Vincent for speaking out against high fees, poor living conditions, and human rights abuses. And they would serve to reinforce the turning campuses into places of fear instead of institutions of learning, that we have increasingly witnessed in recent years.”
Still expressing their concern, the group stressed, “It is unacceptable that state representatives and school management would team up to silence students. This action is antithetical to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which guarantees the freedom of speech and rights to protest. On the other hand, it is an attempt to further intimidate and victimise students into silence in the face of poor studying and living conditions, hike school fees and mismanagement.”
In their prayers, Brown and Ayemhenre stated that “We demand, without compromise Seluwa’s immediate and unconditional reinstatement. Protection from harassment and intimidation. Fair compensation for the time, money, and peace of mind he lost.
The chance to take his exams with his classmates on the due date and immediate reversal of hostel and tuition fees to keep education affordable.”
