The Federal Government has acceded to the organised labour’s demand that the N25,000 salary award to junior workers announced by President Tinubu in his nationwide broadcast be extended to all categories of their colleagues.
This was part of the agreements reached between the government and the organised labour during their meeting in Abuja.
After the meeting, the Chief of Staff to the President, Dr. Femi Gbajabiamila told State House correspondents that the President had endorsed the agreements reached by the negotiation parties.
He said that other consensus agreed upon would be made available after the unions had met with their various organs.
It’s expected that the organised labour would convene a meeting on Tuesday October 2, to present the agreements to their members, and with believe that they would call off the proposed strike slated for Tuesday October 2
Promissory note
The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Joe Ajaero, had confirmed that the unions had gotten a promissory note from the government to take back to its members, saying that the final decision would be communicated afterwards.
‘’We have looked at all the promissory note from the government and looked at how to translate it to reality and make them workable, and we are going to take it to our organs and review. We are hopeful that our organs will take a look at them and give us a fresh mandate on what next to do,’’ he said.
The NLC and the TUC had announced to begin an indefinite strike from Tuesday over the fuel subsidy removal palliatives that government had yet to implement.
The FG emergency meeting with organised Labour
The Federal Government and the organised Labour had a closed doors meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Sunday 1 October 2023.
The emergency meeting which was at the instance of the Federal Government, is a last-minute effort to prevent the nationwide indefinite strike called by the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria slated for October 3.
Labour representatives at the meeting are the NLC President, Joe Ajaero; the TUC’s Secretary, Nuhu Toro and his NLC counterpart, Emma Ugbaja.
The meeting which was at the instance of the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, is being attended by some ministers.
The government team was made up of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong; the Minister of State, Nkeiruka Onyejecha; the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; the Minister of Budget and Economic and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Beta Edu.
