As part of its plan to enlarge it coast of business, the leadership of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency NIMASA is to partner Lagos State Government to close ranks on issues of port development and efficiency, geared towards making the nation’s seaports more competitive and user-friendly.
The Director General of NIMASA, Dr Bashir Jamoh, who paid a courtesy visit on the governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Government House, Alausa, noted that there was need for both parties to strengthen the already existing relationship between them.
This is with a view to enhancing the efficiency of the nation’s seaports in the state, which would enhance revenue generation, not only for the Federal Government, but also for the state through the Wharf Land Fee collected by the state government.
The governor in his response, expressed the willingness of the government under his watch to collaborate with relevant agencies towards making the seaports more efficient and competitive among their peers not only in Africa but also across the globe.
It was gathered that in addition to participating in traffic management within the port access roads as part of efforts to curtail the perennial gridlock, the government has made land available for the development of a truck terminal, which is designed to check indiscriminate parking of articulated vehicles and other trucks on the roads, especially around the seaport axis.
Recall that Nigeria’s two biggest cargo seaports, the Lagos Ports Complex and Tin Can Island Ports Complex, both in Apapa are located in Lagos, which makes the state strategic in terms of achieving port efficiency.
