Nigeria has only 30 insurance professors across the country, Experts lament

Stakeholders in insurance industry have expressed concern over shortage of specialised professors, teaching insurance in tertiary institutions across the country.

They made this known during the training for students on financial inclusion, organised by
Finance and Business Online Publishers Association of Nigeria (FiBOP) last week in Lagos, Nigeria.

In addition, they based their concern over 26 tertiary institutions offerring insurance amidst multitudes of uninsured, noting that unless urgent step is taken, the country may experience shortage of insurance graduates in the nearest future.

On her part, the Rector of College of Insurance and Financial Management (CIFM), Dr Mrs Chizoba Ehiogu, reiterated that the country has only 30 professors with only 26 institutions of learning across the country, which is not enough to serve the purposes of insurance.

Ehiogu, who also was the Moderator of the panelists, charged “federal government to come with more conducive atmosphere for the industry to contribute more to the growth and development of the economy. Government can open door for more insurance studies and encourage individuals and corporate organisations to see insurance as protective arms.”

She further encouraged them to see insurance where there are job securities whereby they can become chartered insurers rather than losing their jobs. “My personal experience can serve as point of encouragement for all as my coming into insurance which was coincidental eventually because the best way for my life today.”

Likewise, Senior Manager and Team Lead, Persistency, AIICO Insurance, Miss Mojisola Ogundipe, charged the participants to see insurance as one of the best choices of studies that are life-changing programmes.

According to Ogundipe, “there are vast opportunities for self-growth and economical development in insurance. Therefore, Nigerian youths should embrace career developments that are lying untapped in the field.”

Giving more details, she describing insurance industry as one of the best studies students can take for jobs protection. Accordingly, Ogundipe said, enumerated the importance and indispensablity in insurance industry that will continue to growth as growth of population.
She however advised them to “Ask questions before you sign anything, including embarking in studying insurance and also charge them to imbibe the culture of personal insurance by starting small and learn big”.

In the same vein, representative of Prince Babatunde Oguntade, President, Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB); Dr. Gbenga Falana, encouraged youths to start rewarding career development which abounds in the industry industry.
