The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a commercial motorcyclist in a lone fatal crash involving an articulated truck early today Sunday along the Sabo-Onimalu corridor, inward Itamaga, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.
According to a statement issued by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, preliminary investigations revealed that the motorcyclist was riding at high speed when he reportedly suffered a brake failure and crashed into the rear of a moving truck transporting flour.
The impact led to the rider’s immediate death, with his body found trapped beneath the truck.
LASTMA officers, who were the first emergency responders at the scene, swiftly secured the area and managed the traffic disruption caused by the accident. The driver of the truck allegedly fled the scene but was later apprehended by LASTMA personnel and handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Shagamu Road Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The body of the deceased was later released to his family members, who arrived at the scene following notification by fellow motorcyclists.
In a statement of condolence, LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended sympathies to the bereaved family. He emphasized the critical need for commercial motorcyclists to prioritize routine safety checks—particularly of brake systems—and urged motorcycle union leaders to intensify awareness campaigns on road safety compliance.
Mr. Bakare-Oki also reiterated the Lagos State Government’s ban on commercial motorcycle operations along designated highways, bridges, and restricted corridors, stressing the importance of strict adherence in the interest of public safety.
“The loss of life from avoidable mechanical failures is tragic and unacceptable,” he stated.
He further urged the public to report all traffic emergencies or incidents involving LASTMA personnel through the Authority’s dedicated hotline: 0810000527862.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safe and orderly road use across Lagos and called on all road users to uphold caution, responsibility, and respect for traffic laws.
