WELCOME to DCLM Devotional 29/05/22

TEXT:2 CHRONICLES 17:1-11

KEY VERSE: And the fear of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat (2 CHRONICLES 17:10).

Kings and political leaders look forward to peace, prosperity and progress in their era and after their exit. They assemble think-tanks to come up with programmes to achieve these goals. Some, however, do not mind employing unreasonable avenues to reach these noble ends. For them, dining with the devil to get what they want is in order.

King Jehoshaphat, in our text, knew that true prosperity and progress could only come to his land through obedience to God’s words. He put the law of the Lord first. He sent teachers of the word of God and priests all over the land of Judah to impress it upon the citizens that if they wanted to enjoy genuine peace and joy, they must honour His Word and detest idolatry. This national zeal for God led heaven to prosper Judah and kept wars away from the land.

Our suffering world will enjoy blessing, prosperity and peace if only we would learn from King Jehoshaphat, who forsook idolatry and made a decision to take his people back to the true God. The individual, who is also at his wits’ end like the agonising societies, can also enjoy a victorious life of peace if he respects the laws of God.

But many go about espousing teachings that have failed to offer them the joy and peace they need. The vast education they have acquired leaves them further frustrated. We must present Jesus to them, the only One who gives “peace… not as the world giveth” (John 14:27). His absence in one’s life brings in chaos and poverty.

MEDITATION

The often underrated secret of success

1. The success story of an icon
The summary of his success was in v5: “The LORD stabilised the kingdom in his hand” and all Judah appreciated him and he *also* “had riches and *honour* in abundance.” Some lose their honour due to how they handle their responsibilities given to them.

QUESTION
How do you want your own success in the kingdom or other areas be summarised? Are you working towards it? Do you have favour and honour with people and God like Jehoshaphat people are thinking of your replacement?🤔

2. The secrets of the success story and involvements
Today, many think that the righteous cannot prosper in governments or leadership without cutting corners or compromising. The case of Jehoshaphat proved that wrong. What was his secrets?

a. The summary of the secret is divine abiding presence: “And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways (or early ways of David before he allowed sin to creep in) of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim”

b. Do you know that many Christians and surprisingly ministers of the gospel are now gone after “Balaam” to compensate for “divine inadequacy”? How did this king stayed on with God without compromise?

c. “He sought to the LORD God of his father, and walked in His commandments, and not after the doing of Israel”, v4.

d. Did he experienced any disappointment from God by leaning on God and seeking Him alone? NO. God will never fail the faithful no matter the opposition from the darkness.

e. Of course, he was not just a governor, he used his position to bring people to the way of God and preach to them, vv8,9. How will God not be with such a person who was overtly using his position to propagate the kingdom expansion?

Are you sure of the abiding presence of God in your life? Do you walk in *all* the ways of God with a fixed mind?

Ask for wisdom and vision to be a man of great success and achievements in what God has committed to your trust.

Ask for power to stand firm in your conviction without compromising your faith.

Ask for the guidance and abiding presence of God to be real in your life and activities.

Pray that God will bring back all those believers and ministers who have compromised to the pure faith
