WELCOME to DCLM Devotional for 30/04/22

It is advisable you read the text first

TEXT:LEVITICUS 15:1-18

KEY VERSE
And the priest shall offer them, the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for him before the LORD for his issue” (LEVITICUS 15:15).

God is holy. He also expects His people to be holy. The Scripture says, “as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation” (1 Peter 1:15).

In order to teach the Israelites the principle of avoiding defilement and impress upon them the serious requirement of holiness, God made use of situations and circumstances prevalent amongst them. They had to learn that whatever God says is bad and sinful must be avoided at all costs. They were required to observe specified rituals to avoid defilement in His sight. Just as physical defilement requires cleansing, spiritual defilement must be atoned for. Specific sacrifices requiring the death of animals were prescribed for the atonement of sins.

Sin defiles. The psalmist said, “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalm 51:5). This means that all men are born defiled and in need of cleansing. Just as God made provision for the atonement of sins for the Israelites through animal sacrifices, Christ’s death at Calvary is for the atonement of sins of the whole world.

All who come to God in repentance and faith will be cleansed from all sins. God is righteous and requires all who approach Him to be cleansed of spiritual defilement. Concealment of defilement leads to divine rejection. “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY..Christ’s blood can cleanse the foulest stain.

THE BIBLE in one YEAR:1 SAMUEL 8-9

MEDITATION

Atonement for the flesh and its filthiness

1. “The flesh”, “touch” are each mentioned five times in the text while “unclean” or “uncleaness” is mentioned 13 times. How many times is the word “clean” mentioned?
2. The flesh in the text means the physical human body while in the New Testament it is the sum total of inherited carnal nature and its uncleanness or filthiness.
3. What comes out of the flesh, according to the text, is unclean, vv2,3.
4. Paul, like every other sincere unregenerate carnal man, said, “I know that in my flesh dwells no good thing” Romans 7:18. Why did Paul say this?
5. Just like the physical flesh produces uncleanness in the text, the carnal nature, called the flesh, produces nothing but moral filthiness and uncleanness.
6. What are some of the products of the carnal man called the works of the flesh in Galatians 5:19-21? Painstakingly check if any of this is in your life. Observe that the text said if you have any of “the works of the flesh” in your life or heart you *cannot* enter the kingdom of God.

So the flesh is very dangerous and should be crucified and death with. It is never your friend.

7. In order to effectively handle uncleanness of the flesh, there must be blood atonement, vv14,15.

8. What concerns blood sacrifice in this matter? Is it not sufficient to just clean off the filthiness?

9. Sin and death are inseparable. A sinner is dead spiritually and condemned to eternal hell, Romans 6:23. For him/her to be free from eternal hell, justice demands that there must be a willing substitute who is sinless. This make the death of Jesus the only death that can satisfy divine justice.

10. Faith in the blood of Jesus is a must if sinners will receive cleansing and be justified before God. But this is not enough?

11. The unclean that is now cleansed by the blood must separate him/herself totally from every object that has the tendency to pollute or defile, vv4-6. Another word used for separation in the text is “touch not”, vv5,7,10.

12. 2 Corinthians 6:17,18 says “touch not the unclean thing and I will receive you, and be a Father unto you…”

Thus abstaining or separation from anything or anybody that defiles is a condition for divine acceptance and sonship.

14. Finally the flesh must be crucified by daily and consciously prayerfully surrendering and subjecting it to Christ and His word, Galatians 2:20. “Walk in the Spirit and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh”

QUESTIONS
a. How can a believer crucify the flesh? Romans 6:6,7,11-14.

b. What are some of the unclean things we are commanded not to touch in 2 Corinthians 6:14-18. Are you totally free?

PRAYER POINTS:
Surrender your flesh and life to Christ and ask Christ to possess them.

Ask God for power over your flesh and all its filthiness.

Ask for grace that will never compromise with the flesh and fleshly temptations.
Pray that all brethren will have their will strengthened never to cooperate with the flesh

HYMN* Wash me O Lamb of God.(GHS 40)
