The leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended the proposed protest over the 50 per cent increase in telecommunication tariff.

The decision was taken after the labour union met with the delegation from the Federal government led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, on Monday.

NLC President, Comrade Joseph Ajaero who made this known on Monday evening in a statement jointly signed by Ajaero and the General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja said as the result of the meeting the protest is for now shifted but not cancelled.

NLC declared that arising from the meeting convened by the Federal Government of Nigeria on the proposed 50% hike in Telecommunications Tariff in the country, which the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) expressed strong opposition to, citing its potential negative impact on the Nigerian workers and the economy with a threat to proceed on a one-day nationwide mass protest, the following resolutions were reached:

That there is a need for the parties to sit together in a technical group to resolve most of the thomy areas raised during the discussion;

Consequently, a 10 – man joint committee was set up of five (5) representatives each from the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC); and

The Committee shail conclude and submit its deliberations within two (2) weeks from this 3% day of February, 2025.

The parties call on Nigerian people to remain calm while this Committee concludes its assignment.

The union set aside the planned protest to give room for the two parties to have proper deliberation which was taken in the combined meeting with Federal Government and NLC.

Citing the hardship and additional burden that would further be placed on the masses as reason for the planned protest, “NLC said the rally will serve as a warning on the dangers of imposing such an unfair increase on a struggling population earning a minimum wage of only ₦70,000; a population that has suffered outrageous hike in the price of petrol, high cost of food, hike in electricity tariff and general rising inflation.”

The decision for the suspension was signed by Secretary to Federal Government, Senator George Akume, Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero and Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja.

The meeting was attended by Secretary to Federal Government, Senator George Akume,
Minister Communication and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijanni, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, among others.

It would be recalled that NLC had on Wednesday last week declared that it will embark on a nationwide mass rally on Tuesday February 4, 2025, in protest of the 50 per cent telecom tariff increase recently approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
