LISFF 2024 Celebrates Innovation with British Council Film Lab Africa’s Microfilm Showcase

The British Council Film Lab Africa programme continues its exciting showcase season with a live screening at the first edition of the Lagos International Smartphone Film Festival (LISFF) held at Silverbird Cinemas and Galleria. As part of the ongoing journey to spotlight innovative African filmmaking talent, British Council Film Lab Africa showcased its microfilms, highlighting the creative prowess of emerging African filmmakers.


Still, in the spirit of its showcase season, which spans several prestigious events, British Council Film Lab Africa showcase was at LISFF 202, highlighting the impact the festival played in elevating the hard work of emerging filmmakers. These microfilms, produced during the Film Lab Africa programme, offered the audience a glimpse into the diverse stories and unique perspectives shaping the future of African cinema.

The event commenced with an introduction by the host, followed by a keynote address from the convener, Kayode Bakare, who emphasised the significance of democratising filmmaking through smartphones. The festival featured screenings of microfilms, including that of British Council Film Lab Africa, presenting peculiar works from emerging African filmmakers. Attendees also enjoyed curated selections of smartphone films from Nigerian creators and international talents, along with opportunities for networking and engaging discussions that celebrated the growth of the Nigerian Cinema.

“Film Lab Africa is more than a platform; it’s an opportunity for African filmmakers to reimagine storytelling using smartphones, blending technology with their creative flair,” noted Harry Keisena, Arts Programme Manager – British Council.

The festival, aimed at spotlighting the diverse methods of film production by embracing smartphone technology, saw Film Lab Africa take center stage. The microfilms, short yet powerful cinematic pieces, underscored the programme’s core mission—to nurture emerging voices in African cinema by providing tools, training, and opportunities. Through this initiative, the British Council continues to foster cross-cultural collaboration and showcase the immense potential of African talent on a global scale.

At LISFF, the impact of Film Lab Africa’s microfilms was palpable.
