The National leadership of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has expressed the support of the union in the protests against SARS across the country.
President, Comrade Williams Niredonana Akporeha made this known to allcitynews.ng at the weekend.
In his reaction to question by this medium that NUPENG is planning to join the EndSARS protests by shutting down filling stations and withdrawing it’s tanker drivers from delivery of fuel as mark of solidarity to the protests, Akporeha said: “there no shutting down of fuel stations or installations by NUPENG across the country because of EndSARS protests.”
According to him “NUPENG stands with Nigerian youths against Police brutality and call for immediate and far reaching Police reforms as our members are as well victims of Police brutality and abuses through extortion, detention, harassment and intimidation nationwide.
“Meanwhile, no organ of our Union has ordered shutting down of fuel stations or oil installations.
“We sincerely empathize with all victims of police brutality including our members across the country and we peacefully join all well meaning Nigerians to say police brutality must stop!”
Allcitynews.ng saw that the nationwide protests which entered it’s ten days today is getting wider demands by the protesters. The protests are not only against police brutality but also to address the age-long injustice, marginalisation and neglects by government, political class but also against bad governance.
According to Bishop Dr Chris Kwakpovwe, publisher of the popular and leading Christian devotional, OUR DAILY MANNA,” the protest is beyond police brutality, it’s a manifestation of years of anger, neglect and a general explosion and President Muhammadu Buhari must listen to Nigerian youth to avoid greater damage because there’s serious suffering in the land.”
Further he said, “these current protests will get wider scope someday as we can all see its moved from #EndSARS to #ENDSWAT and will ultimately move on to become “End Bad Governance” and its clear that this will not be business as usual and this time around our leaders must listen, take action and be serious.”
